IRCTC Bans Waitlisted Passengers from Sleeper & AC Coaches (May 2025 Update)


Starting May 1, 2025, Indian Railways has banned waitlisted ticket holders from traveling in Sleeper and AC coaches. This update is aimed at enhancing the comfort and safety of confirmed passengers.

What the Rule Says

  • Only confirmed ticket holders can travel in Sleeper and AC classes.
  • Waitlisted passengers are not allowed to board these reserved coaches.
  • Applies to both online (IRCTC) and counter tickets.
  • Violations can lead to fines (up to ₹440) and removal by TTEs.

Reason Behind the Ban

  • To prevent overcrowding and unauthorized travel.
  • Ensure comfort and security in reserved coaches.
  • Stop misuse of booking system by agents and touts.

What Can Waitlisted Passengers Do?

  • You may still travel in general (unreserved) coaches.
  • Do not attempt to enter Sleeper or AC coaches with a WL ticket.
  • Refunds available:
    • Online (IRCTC): Auto-cancelled and refunded if WL.
    • Counter Ticket: Cancel at PRS counter for a refund.

  • Track your PNR status before boarding.
  • Use Tatkal quota for last-minute bookings.
  • Opt for IRCTC Vikalp scheme for alternate trains.
  • Book early – reservation window is now 60 days.
